Gowri pettige:
Gowri pettige is what a mother-in-law gives to her daughter in law. Along
with this mother also gives a token item. Thus, the girl upholds both the
tradition. It will have small krishna pratima [for krishna shadaxara mantra
dhyaana], vishhnu paada, Chakraanike, Annapurna {gauri), small family vigraha
if any. Along with this, a small ganga kalasha bearing ganga or yamuna jala.
This is basic and carried along with gopi chandana box.
Since, Ganga jala or Chakranike has nitya sannidhaana, meaning God is ever
present in these in a way to give phala and to bless the girl , she doesn't
have to do any aavaahane while doing nitya puje. All the rest are symbolic to
remind her of God.
Concept
of Gowri:
Before doing puja, one has to keep in mind the
pancha-bheda:
1. The vigraha/pratima that is seen is jaDa - nonsentient.
2. In that we invoke with prArthana all devatas -- sentient
3. Devatas also have jaDa deha and it varies from each other -- jada-jada
bheda.
4. In them we invoke, vaayu as the seat -- jiva-jiva bheda.
5. In vaayu, we invoke, Laxmi Naaraayana -- jiva-ishvara bheda.
The very word "Gowri" suggest that she gives pure knowledge [gau =
veda] which in turn pleases God whose prasaada brings eternal joy. Thus, the
prarthana of Gowri is very important as she stands in charge of all
axaras/letters whose various sequence forms the very "speech"
especially veda-vaani which extolls Lord Laxmi Naaraayana.
Her greatness can be gauzed by knowing that she is the Guru who instigates
knowledge of Bhagavan to deities like Indra, Surya, Agni, Yama, Niruti, Varuna,
Chandra, Bhruhaspathi, kaama, mitra. These deities of dasha-dik in turn bring
us meaning of all that we hear as sound that comes from all directions.
Gowri brings forth speech based on how it is conceived by the mind and thus she
depends on mano-niyaamaka Rudra from whom she is never separated. Thus, by
praying them as in-separable makes our mind-speech co-ordinate as
"one" as "ardha-naari" rupa. This kind of
"daampatya" should be reflected in those who seek as well to bring
"mangala".
Hence, special puja of this mangala-gowri is done prior to marriage when she is
worshipped as "Daxayani". Actually. this worship is done by Chandra
and Rohini. With this thought, the young bride invokes Chandra-Rohini within
herself [ and her spouse] and worships Daxayani and Maheshvara. This prepares
her mind by removing all unwanted thoughts as Chandra and Rohini cleanse and
prepare the mind of the bride.
Next, the bride invokes Gandharva-Apsara in her to worship Gowri as
"Mahadevi-Mahadeva". By this process, the gandharva Vishvavasu administers
the devotees words so that her speech never harms anyone and Apsara gives charm
to her speech.
Next, the young bride invokes, Svaha-Agni in her and worships Gowri as
"KaaLi" and this helps her to swallow and ignore all unimportant
issues that come out in the form of speech. [sahana-shakti]This helps to take
the high road. Finally, she invokes Manu-Shatarupa and worships Gowri as
"Shankari" to get happiness in her life.
This special prarthana in the form of puje is done during vivaha and followed
for 5 years as "vrata" and later by habit it is done as puje every
year, month, vaara, day by all ladies!
The conducive month to start is shravana whose deity itself is Indra, the giver
of all aishvarya and who happens to be an ardent shishya of Umadevi. He helps
all devotees by giving good concentration to hear the glory of the Lord.

Brief outline of the story narrated by Lord Krishna to Dharmaraaja from
Bhavishyat puraana.
In a place called Kundinapura, a good vaishya by name Dharmapaala lived with
his wife. They didn't have any children. Rudra himself used to come to his
house disguised as a bhixu and upon request from the couple, he tells
Dharmapaalaka to go to a place on a blue horse and wherever the horse stops and
falls down, he should dig it. That place has a beautiful pratima of Paarvati
and he should worship the pratima. The vaishya does so ad pleased by his
worship, Paarvati tells him to get on to a tree protected by Ganesha and pick
just one fruit and give it to his wife. Out of greed, Dharmapaala tries to get
many and gets cursed that his son will die prematurely at the age of 16.
Due to the prasaada of Paarvati, Dharmapaala is blessed with a son called Shiva
and he does all samskaaras and sends the son along with his uncle to Kashi to
seek Lords blessings. On the way they halt in a place called Pratishtaapura.
There they witness the conversation between some girls. A girl named
Susheela gets cursed to become a widow and for that Susheela says with faith
that such a situation of being a widow will never come to anyone in her family
as they observe mangala gowri puja. Hearing that, the uncle wishes to have that
girl as the bride for his nephew. The strange development is that the groom
Hara who was supposed to marry Susheela gets very sick and doesn't make to the
wedding in time and Shiva takes his place just for the ceremony.
That night, Susheela gets a dream of a snake in the form of "mrutyu"
trying to kill her husband and Mangala Gowri tells her to keep a pot with milk
so that when the snake tries to get in close the mouth of the pot with blouse
piece and then give the pot as "daana" to her mother who has done
this puja of mangala gowri. Susheela follows that advise and when her mother
opens the pot, the snake had turned into an ornament.
In the meanwhile, Shiva leaves the place quietly that night as promised
to Hara, the original groom but Susheela turns him down and waits for Shiva.
Shiva visits Kashi with his uncle and realizes that he has been granted a long
life by Mangalagowri and returns to Pratishhtaapura and rejoins Susheela who
completes the vrata. They happily return back to Kundinapura to the great joy
of their parents and continue to worship Mangala Gowri.
