1. What is the focus of this puja -- who is "Gowri"

First and foremost one has to know whom we are worshipping. By Gowri, which deity, we refer to:
a. The popular Shiva patni Gowri
b. Saraswati or Laxmi rupa

It is BOTH plus VISHHNU!!!!!!!

Just like how we get name AFTER we are born, so also every devata, right from Chaturmukha Brahma gets when they are "created" by Vishhnu during shrushhti. Like how we give up this name when we leave our body [and next janma, another name and so on...]. so also the devatas lose their name! Note that our "name" was there even before we were born, so also every "devatas" name was there always before they got "created".

So, who is REAL bearer, owner and has the name Gowri? It is Vishhnu, who has ALL names. He has no "birth" and "death", and present in ALL with all names. He  "lends" His OWN names to all devatas. Since He is all pervading, He is in those devatas with the same name too. Why He is inside them? Vedas declare that without Him being present inside them, they cannot  have very existence nor function!

Along with Vishhnu, Laxmi is also all pervading with all names including Gowri naama [even before Paarvati's namakarana as Gowri]. Laxmi doesn't have birth nor death unlike other devatas. Vishhnu from beginningless time is staying inside Laxmi with all names, so she also gets to be called as Gowri. Without Vishhnu, Laxmi has NO existence nor functioning too!

At the time of shrushhti process of "Paarvati", Vishhnu gave His name  Gowri to Paarvati, and stayed inside her with His Gowri rupa to give her "existence", and control her. As mentioned earlier Laxmi is also there inside "paarvati" with the name Gowri.

Thus, whenever, wherever, however you do puje of "Paarvati", you have to think of:
1. First Paarvati with the name Gowri
2. Inside her, there is all pervading and controlling her is Bharati/Saraswati and inside them is Laxmidevi with the name Gowri.
3. Inside all these two, there is sarva antaryaami Vishhnu with His stri-rupa with the name Gowri.

Failing to do step 2 and 3, the devotee will NOT get full anugraha, why so?

Imagine you visit a friends place along with your guru-s, parents, and your friend just attends you and completely ignores your guru-s, will you be happy?

However, as a courtesy, you'll send a "thank you" note. Similar is the case here.

These deities will ONLY give temporary objects along with worries! Every object/person gives initial joy and leads o over attachment, and finally every "creation/birth" has an end/separation which gives great sorry only. Hence, keeping in one's mind on Paramaatma who neither has "birth" nor "death" alone can save as and help us cross our worries/loss/separation to move on with our sadhana.

Thus every puja is a worship of the in-dweller and also through whom He bestows the phala.

2. Meaning of Gowri, and fruit of knowing this.

One seeks “mangala” by worshipping Gowri . Managala means upliftment. Upliftment in what?

This is answered by the shabda "Gowri" Here, "gau" means veda and the knowledge contained in Veda.
What is the phala of this knowledge
"ri" -- makes us experience the ananda both here and in the other worlds/moxa.
when prayed and worshipped knowing that the stri rupa Bhagavan called Mangala Gauri is present in Laxmi who is also called as Mangala Gauri and together they are present in Bharati and Mukhyaprana and they in turn are present in Gauri-Parameshvara.

3. When do we get "special" adhikaara for Gowri vrata

Gowri puja is for all even young girls however to observe it as vrata with a vow, a woman gets eligibility during the wedding.

During the 4 day vivAha or even if it is just a day vivAha, the couple have to make themselves "fitted" by being aware of and invoking the specific devatas in whom Narayana and Laxmi are present in a special way and do puja. In Bhagavata it is mentioned that for vivAha and pranaya-sukha [married bliss] the deity in whom we worship Laxmi-Narayana is Parvati and Parameshvara.

1. The first day, the couple have to do chintane of Chandra-Rohini in them and worship the stri rupa of the Lord present in Daxayani [Satidevi born as the daughter of Daxa Prajapati].

2. Second day, they couple have to do chintane of Gandharva-Apsara in them and worship the stri-rupa of Narayana present in Maheshvari along with Mahadeva.

3. Third day, the couple have to be aware of the special presence of Agni and his wife Svaha in them to worship the stri rupa of Narayana present in Kaali.

4. Fourth day, they become fitted to be “maanava-maanavi “[worthy of gettting knowledge as it is the only birth where it is possible] and worship the stri-rupa of Narayana in Shaankari [wife of Shankara] along with Shankara to give the maanava-maanavi the "sham" = sukha in the vivAha for a long time.

4. Concept of Puja and invoking the deity:

Puja is to note the difference between Paramaatma-Jiva-Jada. Thus, there are 5 differences:

1. jiva-jiva bheda,
2. jiva-ishvara bheda
3. jada-jada bheda
4. jada-jiva bheda and
5. jada-ishvara bheda.

Paramaatma is present inside our hrudaya along with all devatas. It is this indweller along with His parivaara devatas we invoke in the pratima in front of us, keeping in mind the above 5 differences.

 1. Our jada-deha is different from our soul.

2. Inside our hrudaya, all devatas are residing and there is difference among them.

3. They also have suxma deha which is different from our deha.

4. All the jivas, are different from the in-dweller Antaryaami Paramaatma.

5. All the jada dehas are different from Antaryaami Paramaatma.

Not just inside our deha, but also in the “gowri pratima”, one has to SEE this 5 bheda when invoking the in-dweller.

1. The jada pratima

2.  The various invoked parivaara devatas are different among themselves.

3. These  invoked parivaara devatas are different from the jada pratima we have kept for puja.

4. The invoked Antaryaami Paramaatma is different from all His parivara devatas.

5.  The invoked Antaryaami Paramaatma is different from all the jada that we see.

Puje done knowing this distinction removes our ajnana and gives jnana leading to Bhagavat Anugraha as prasada.

5. Puja Procedure

The sampradaaya for Chaitra Gowri is to keep a small icon of Gowri in a swing called Uyyala. If not, can keep any symbolic icon in a decorated peeta, along with “ganga kalasha” where  we invoke the in-dweller.
After Achamana, pranayaama, sankalpa, do the dhyaana of Gowri as stated above with pancha bheda and invite Paramaatma along with the devatas to kindly come in one form and be present in the pratima in front and accept our puja and do anugraha on us, and everyone.

As with any puja, offer 16 upacharas:

1. avahana

2. asanam

3. paadyam

4. argyam

5. achamana, madhuparka, punarachamana

6. snaanam

7. vastra, asanam,

8. haladi, kumkuma, yajnopavitram,bhushhana

9. gandha,

10 pushpam

11. dhupa

12. deepa

13 naivedya

14.  mangala arathi

15. pradaxinam

16. namaskaram

[6 upa puje: mukhavasa, tambula, darpana, chhatra, chaamara, paaduka]

These can be done using water in pyaala and offering few drops into another pyaala using uddarini.

This puje can be continued for 15 days, 1 month in a simple short way and then finally  pray the invoked deity to return back inside of hrudaya along with His parivaara.

Of course, this special Chaitra gowri/maasa gowri“vrata” may end, but “gowri” puje is a nitya puje along with Tulasi puje.
