1. Introduction
2. Maagha Snana -- time, place and adhikaari
3. Prayaaga smarane
4. Daana
5. Devata group who govern this month
In the lunar calendar, the name that a lunar month gets is based on the cluster of naxatra that is present on [ or nearby] full moon day.
Thus, in this month of Maagha, the full moon is present nearby or within the cluster of Maagha naxatra.
Based on this, the lunar month duration is taken from either:
a. Fullmoon to fullmoon [poornima to poornima] or
b. Newmoon to newmoon [amaavaasya to amaavaasya ].
In the south most of us follow the latter, however for "maasa snana", we follow, the former.
Maagha Snana:
The name, "maagha" itself suggests that the Bhagavan who is devoid of all dosha removes the paapa in us [maa+agha] and He being Vedamurti, gives vedic jnana to us [maa+ gha]
This month marks the start of Uttaraayana which is perceived as the "daytime" of the devatas. At the dawn of the day, they do jnana snana by worshipping the Lord Madhava in the "drava rupa" water and urge strongly and loudly calling ["raTantyApaH"] the sAdhakas to "wake up" and do the smarane of Bhagavan. Thus those who hear them and do snana during the auspicious early hours of the morning with the smarane of Bhagavan Madhava during this month will get cleansed of many grave sins and get the vishesha anugraha of Bhagavan.
The key is "keeping the mind on Prayaaga Madhava" while doing the snana. Just like how the water cleanses all the external dirt, so also the thought of Bhagavan in the mind, removes all internal dirts and its progeny, and even destroys its very root cause i.e., paapa that has accumulated from past sins. When the Bhagavan shines in the mind, where is the question of darkness in the mind?
The uttama kaala for snana is when the naxatras are still seen just before sun rise.
The next best is when the stars start to fade as the sun rises.
The adhama kaala is when the sun is about to rise and no star is seen.
The dharma shastra grantha, Nirnaya Sindhu says that no matter where you live or which water one uses for snana, the "smarana" of Prayaga Madhava, grants the phalas of ganga snana this month in particular.
"yatra kutraapi snaane prayaaga smaraNam mahA phalaM"
"यत्र कुत्रापि स्नाने प्रयाग स्मरणम् महा फलं"
The snana should be for all ages, gender, ashrama, and varnas.
"brahmachaarI gruhastho vA vAnaprastho atha bhixukaH
bAlavR^iddhayuvAnashcha naranArInapuMsakAH " iti
"ब्रह्मचारी गृहस्थो वा वानप्रस्थो अथ भिक्षुकः
बालवृद्धयुवानश्च नरनारीनपुंसकाः इति"
Smarane:
Thus, with this smarane when the snana is done the Lord present in the sun with his thousands of rays takes away our sin and they get washed away in the water. He bestows good health and needed sampat to make this janma and the future janmas fruitful in all respects.
Tila is used in six ways for this removal of paapa - white tila is used in homa, black in pitru tarpana, and tila oil for deepa, snana, tila is consumed along with gud/bella/jaggery as prasaada,
"tilasnAyI tilodvartI tilahomI tilodakI
tilaBhuk tiladAtA cha shaT tilAH pApanAshanAH"
तिलस्नायी तिलोद्वर्ती तिलहोमी तिलोदकी
तिलभुक् तिलदाता च षट् तिलाः पापनाशनाः
According to desha kaala, appropriate vastus like blanket, vastra, bedding, vessels along with sugar cane, white pumpkin, til can be given.
The key is not the vastus that we give as they are symbolic but what need to be given up is the feeling of "mama-kaara" as everything belongs to Him. Thus "giving up the right of ownership" is critical.
Devatas and the kaala:
Bhagavan Sri Hari who is our in-dweller is also present outside us, as kaalarupi in the sun and moon and guides the Universe. Apart from the Sun and Moon [which are the indicators of time for us], he is also specially present in the 7 groups who assist the Sun every month. These devatas, worship the in-dweller Laxmi Narayana. Knowing this fact, we also reap the benefit of utilizing the month towards our sadhana. This maagha maasa goes by the name "tapas" in the prachina system. The kaala niyamaka Bhagavat rupa for this month is Kamala Madhava.
Bhagavan Maadhava's rupa is of the brilliance of "rising sun" with Chakra, Shanka, Padma and Gada [clockwise starting from Lords' right hand top]. The Laxmi rupa is Kamala.
The seven groups that govern and or guide us every month is:
1. Surya
2. Apsara
3. Raxasa
4. Naaga
5. Taxa
6. Rishi
7. Gandharva
For this month,
1. the Surya goes by the name Pushha.
2. Apsara is Ghritaachii
3. Raxasa is Vaata
4. Naaga is Dhananjaya
5. Taxa is Sushena
6. Gautama is the Rishi
7. Suruchi is the gandharva.
While before and after doing snana, at least till basic puje, it is desired that one observes "kAshTa mauna" meaning that one should keep contemplating on the above smarane of the Lord Madhava.
The very name "tapas" suggests the month is meant for "contemplation" [tapa = alochane]. With this rupa, Bhagavan guides us if we see the presence of Bhagavan pervading during this month instead of seeing it as an inert non-sentient time.
Note: **The word "prayaaga" literally refers to the sangama of two or more rivers. Just as when two or more rivers meet with great force, they uproot huge trees and wash away the dirt, so does the thought of Madhava uproots many obstacles in samsaara caused by trigunas especially the internal enemies like kama, krodha, lobha, madha and matsarya. The rupa here is Madhava meaning the controller of Laxmi who gives veda jnana [maa= veda jnana and its abhimani Laxmi; "dhava" means Lord] This guna-chintana of Madhava not only uproots the obstacles in samsaara but bestows the sadhana trayas aka jnana-bhakti-vairagya. "Madhava" also means the one who doesn't have fear and removes the fear called samsaara and gives moxa which is amrutha [maa = not; dhu = kampane; va = amrutha].With this jnana-bhakti-vairagya, Chaturmukha worshippes Madhava both at the the triveni sangama at Prayaag and also inside our deha where the 3 naDis meet.**

Wonderful write-up. Very useful in anusandhAna .. Thank you..
ReplyDeleteNamaskara, Thanks a lot for the excellent article. Can anyone please let me know how to do anusandhana of Prayaga Madhava? (think of Madhava who is Niyamaka of Prayaga? Please confirm). naham kartha Hari Kartha ...
ReplyDeleteNamaskara, The word "prayaaga" literally refers to the sangama of two or more rivers.
ReplyDeleteJust as when two or more rivers meet with great force, they uproot huge trees
and wash away the dirt, so does the thought of Madhava uproots many obstacles
in samsaara caused by trigunas especially the internal enemies like kama,
krodha, lobha, madha and matsarya.
The rupa here is Madhava meaning the controller of Laxmi who gives
veda jnana [maa= veda jnana and its abhimani Laxmi; "dhava" means Lord] This
guna-chintana of Madhava not only uproots the obstacles in samsaara but
bestows the sadhana trayas aka jnana-bhakti-vairagya. "Madhava" also means
the one who doesn't have fear and removes the fear called samsaara and gives
moxa which is amrutha [maa = not; dhu = kampane; va = amrutha]
With this jnana-bhakti-vairagya, Chaturmukha worshippes Madhava both at the
the triveni sangama at Prayaag and also inside our deha where the 3 naDis meet.
