This Shravana maasa is very special as Indra is the abhimani for this month -- he represents shravana, manana and dhyana. Apart from that, being the Lord of three worlds, he bestows sAdhana-sampath due to his constant meditation of his antaryami Sri Vidya sameta Upendra nAmaka Bhagavan present in Bharatiramana Mukhyaprana.

The thought of this mano niyamaka Indra-deva who
1. has yellow complexion,
2. vajrayudha
3. Iravata as vahana
4. Shachidevi as his consort
5. Amaravathi as his capital
6. guarding the eastern regions of the bhu-mandala and also our hrutkamala purva dala.

Serving the Lord Vidya sameta Upendra will remove all obstacles and give sAdhana-sampath.
As for this vrata, it is for everyone! This time, it is even more auspicious being dvadashi and also the day of Sri Vishnu's Pavitra-aropanam puje. This pavitra-aropana puje itself is meant to remove all lopa-dosha in all our puje acharane in this year so far by our repentance and paves way to sampurna-phala of all vrata pujas. Here the pavitra is not "darbha" but silk or cotton thread three in number is taken together as maalakaara and tied with 12, 24, 36 knots symbolic of "keeping" various Bhagavat rupas. This Bhagavan called Pavitra, as the very name suggests protects the jivas like "pavi" meaning diamond [especially the jivas with jnana-ananda which are prescious like diamonds], so He is called as Pavitra.

For those who don't have time, can just follow this short procedure with mind fixed on Laxmi Narayana. There is often "fear" factor associated with such puja saying that one should NOT do these puje if such sampradaaya is not there etc. For those who have proper understanding -- as to whom one is worshiping and what for, then there is no room for fear. If still one is uncomfortable, atleast one should do this puje with a picture or with a samll pratika/pratima  of Laxmi Narayana.

Bhagavat Gita # 12.5 says how Laxmi puje is very very difficult [if done without the awareness of Her antayami Lord Narayana] as there is strict procedure associated with it, and even if a small violation occurs she will curse us.
This is true ONLY when one worships Laxmi ALONE ignoring her Lord Narayana. However, if one does worship her ALONG with Narayana as sarva-antaryami, then surely we will get their anugraha in everything we do.
Thus the key is to worship the "Stri rUpa" of Narayana in Varamahalaxmi with Vayudevaru as its adhishtana/Ayatana. Every stuthi/stotra/nama that we utter applies predominantly to Sri Hari only and then only to Laxmidevi and Mukhyavaayu.

With this in mind, here is a quick procedure:
Do the devara puje, japa etc., first and then begin Varamahalaxmi puje as follows:

1. Achamanam
2. Sankalpa
Pray Ganesha first followed by dvarapaalakas and piTa devatas. This can be done mentally if no time.
3. yamuna puje -- yamuna kalasha to be kept and haldi kumkum applied and Bhagavan in yamuna should we worshiped. Time permitting do 1-23 steps below [skipping #15]. If no time at all, ignore the kalasha etc., and do manasika smarane -- the stress is in doing the puje atleast mentally with panchabheda jnana in what we do instead of skipping the entire puje itself!

Then, Varalaxmi Narayana puje:
Keep a cup/pyaala with water. In this water, all devatas are present and in them Bhagavan who is none other than Bimbarupi is present. Same Bhagavan is also present in all our Karmas. Thus thinking, offer this [God given] water to Laxmi Narayana thinking that Bhagavan, the in-dweller [bimbarupi Sri Hari] is same in everything and that everything is His adhina.

1. dhyanam -- Bhagavat rupa in our bimba to be thought of and invoked in the kalasha/vigraha containing water to which mangala dravyas like haldi, pushpa, colored [yellow or red] axate are added. The kalasha is to be placed on a piTa.
Now offer water from pyala three times into another cup placed in front of God saying dhyanam samarpayaami...

Tora/granthi sthapana puje: Take two strands of thread and apply haldi and make 9 [or 12 ] knots with each one as a pratishTa of Bhagavan's Stri rupa in Laxmi and place it in front of the kalasha.

repeat as before for the following using water [and or axate]

2. asanam samarpayaami
3. argyam samarpayaami
4. Paadyam samarpayaami
5. Achamanam samarpayaami..

12. Mangala dravyaani samarpayaami --gandham, haldi, kumkum, axate samarpayaami

[**Taken from Vrataanushhtaana paddhati]

If you have time, chant the following while giving:
"indirA pratigRuhNAti indiraa vai dadAti cha

इन्दिरा तारका द्वाभ्यां इन्दिरायै नमो नमः

If you are alone, then keep aside and give it to someone later with haldi-kumkum daxina. Then, wear the tora as her prasada by chanting:

badhnAmi daxiNe haste nava sUtraM shubhapradam
putra pautrAbhivRuddhiM cha saubhaagyaM dehi me ramE ||

बध्नामि दक्षिणे हस्ते नव सूत्रं शुभप्रदम्

Next day do puje and do visarjana by saying:

yAntu deva gaNa sarve pUjaamAdaaya matkRutAM iShTa kAmyaartha siddhyartham punarAgamanaaya cha ||

यान्तु à¤¦ेव गण सर्वे पूजामादाय मत्कृतां इष्ट

27. Sarva samarpanam.
In ShAstra, there is something called "artha-vaada" which consists of 4 aspects:
1. Stuthi
2. Ninda
3. Parakruti
4. Purakalpa
That is, to put the sAdhakas in the right path, certain karmas are extolled and this is called Stuthi.
Denouncing those who don't do such good karmas -- Ninda
Giving an example in the form of a story about what happend to one who ignored Narayana -- Parakruti
Giving example from the past about many who did in the right way and obtained the desired results -- Puraakalpa.
This methodology was shown and practiced by Chaturmukha Brahma himself and explained in Gita # 3.10-13
Thus, keeping in line with this, often stories are told in connection with the pujas.
Puranas often associate this in the form of a dialogue between Suta maharishi and Shaunaka Maharishi about the importance of this puje. The stress is on how the grace of Laxmi Narayana [who is our antaryaami] is needed for one's sAdhana. sAdhana-sampath that Laxmi gives has to be received with gratitude to God and gurus and used for satkaaryas as it doesn't belong to us, and that we are at her mercy all the time. Such a thought removes all kinds of anishta and gives more and more sAdhana-sampath along with guru-prasada for those jivas who suffer in this samsaara. This puje is very auspicious when done in the month of Shravana just before and close to the full moon day in shukla paxa shukra-vaara.

Story

"Vratanushtaana Paddhati by Sri Chaturvedi Vidwan S. Vedavyasacharya
There was a very devoted girl named Charumathi in vidharbha who had impeccable character and values. In order to bless her further, Laxmi devi appreared in her dream as Varamahalaxmi and told her to do varalaxmi puje giving all details of this vrata. Charumathi followed it with devotion and got all the sAdhana-sampath.

This apart, there was a king who served his country well but didn't have children so married again. One day he went out for hunting and chased a wild animal and killed it. The animal was none other than a gandharva who was pleased that the king released him from the curse [though unknowingly]. With great joy, this gandharva taught the king the procedure for Varalaxmi puje which he did right there and with "sacred thread" when he entered the palace, the haughty queen became suspicious and threw away the sacred tora. The first wife, on the other hand, with great devotion took the sacred thread and wore it and became very dear to the King due to Laxmi Narayana's grace while the other queen suffered hardship.
Thus, those who worship Laxmi-Narayana especially on this shravana shukravaara will not only attain all sAdhana-sampath but will retain it even in the coming janmas and reach moxa.

Mangala-arati songs

Note:
Vyuha is basically a cluster of His own rupa-visheshas meant for karya vishesha. At the time of shrushti, Mula Narayana takes chatur-vyuha [MBTN 3.9] -- Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.
Like these, Acharya says in MBTN 1.10, there is: the 5 vyuha [Narayana, Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha] of Sri Hari
b. 12 vyuha of Shri Keshava to Damodhara.
c. 10 rupas cluster Matsya etc.
d. 100 rupas with Narayana cluster
e. 1000 rupas cluster like Vishva..
f. 18 or many rupa vyuha like Para
g. 51 matruka vyuha Further we also see vyuhas within them like in Taitiriya,

Chandogya how each vyuha will be made up of one aspect of God like Narayana vyuha will have: Narayana-Narayana Narayana-Vasudeva Narayana-Pradyumna Narayana-Aniruddha and so on. Here the chintane is that each "Akara" is made up of His own jnana-ananda maya Narayana rupa

  1. On Dwadashi day, does the pooja have to be completed before Paarayana? Or we can do the Lakshmi pooja after dwadashi paarayana?
