UpodghAtaH:
What is nyAsa:
While uttering some sacred mantra bhAgas, we touch some parts of our body. While doing this, we must meditate upon the corresponding form of the Lord and have to do the anusandhAna that the almighty Lord is specially present there in that form and seek His grace. There is certain procedure for doing the nyAsa.

nyAsa and vinyAsa are samAnArthaka (mean the same). When doing varNanyAsa, each varNa or akShara has to end with anusvAra and begin with OMkAra. The fingers have to be used in the following way. Only middle finger is used to touch the head (shirasi). For the eyes, index finger and middle finger are used (netrayoH or chakShuShoH). Thumb and ring finger are used for the nose (nAsikAyAM or nAsayoH). Thumb and index finger (j~nAna mudra) are used for the mouth (vAchi). Thumb and little finger are used for the heart / chest (hR^idi). Except thumb, other four fingers are used for navel (nAbhau). All the five fingers are used for the knees and feet (jAnvoH and pAdayoH).

While doing the nyAsa, one has to use the fingers as mentioned above.

Speciality of SrikR^iShna ShaDakShara mantra:
Mantras yield both aihika phala (mundane benefits) and AmuShmilka phala (BhagavatprIti and mokSha-prApti). It is natural that we get a doubt as to what happens to all these mantras in Kali yuga.

Sri Madhvacharya said the following in tantra-saara-saMgraha.

dR^iShTArtha eva mantrANAm kalau vIryaM tiraskR^itam |
tatrApyuddIpta-vIryA hi mantrA atra pra-kIrtitAH |
vAshiShTa-vR^iShNi-pravara-mantrAstatrApi vIryadAH || - 4-42

dṛṣṭārtha eva mantrāṇām kalau vīryaṁ tiraskṛtam |
tatrāpyuddīpta-vīryā hi mantrā atra pra-kīrtitāḥ |
vāśiṣṭa-vṛṣṇi-pravara-mantrāstatrāpi vīryadāḥ || - 4-42

(Mantras give both aihika phala or vaishayika phala (material benefits) and pAratrika phala or AmuShmika phala (After-life benefits like liberation). The main benefit is latter one only.) In Kaliyuga, the aihika phala is diminished considerably for all the mantras. (Paratrika phala continues to be the same). Even among them, only the most powerful mantras are extolled in this work. Even among them Sri Vedavyasa mantra and Sri Krishna ShaDakShara mantra are the most powerful ones.

SrikR^iShNa ShaDakShara mantra:
1. Shuddhi:
apavitraH pavitro vA sarvAvasthAM gato.api vA |
yassmaret puNDarIkAkShaM sa bAhyAbhyantarashshuchiH ||

(Hold water in the uddhariNi using left hand and touch the water with right thumb and sprinkle on self uttering the above mantra.)

Brief meaning: Whether one is pure or impure or in whatever state one may be, one who remembers the Lord's name 'PuNdarIkAkAsha' gets purified both inside and outside.

2. Achamana and punarAchamana:
The Achamana is to be performed facing East or North. If accidentally, one performs it facing the West, then it has to be repeated facing the East to get the purity. If it is done facing the South, one has to take bath and get the purity and do Achamana correctly.

Keshava = One who instigates Brahma and Rudra (ka = brahma, Isha = Rudra, tau vartayati).

NArAyaNa = One who is flawless and also full of auspicious qualities (ara = flaw, nAra = Auspicious quality, ayana = receptacle; na+ara+ayana = not a receptacle of flaws; nAra+ ayana = receptacle of auspicious qualities)

mAdhava = Consort of Lakshmi (maA = LakShmi; dhava = husband)
Govinda = Known by the Vedas('Go' means Veda vAk).
ViShNu = All-pervading.
MadhusUdana = Killer of the demon Madhu.
Trivikrama = Who pervaded the entire Universe with two feet and placed third foot on Bali Chakravarti.
VAmana = Unimaginably good-looking.
ShrIdhara = One who bears Lakshmi on His chest.
HR^iShIkesha = Controller of the sense organs.
PadmanAbha = One Who has lotus in the navel.
DAmodara = Yielding to the devotion of Yashoda, allowed her to tie his waist with ropes.
SaMkarShaNa = One who attracts all.
 VAsudeva = The God that resides everywhere.
Pradyumna = One with the greatest effulgence.
Aniruddha = One who is unstoppable = One Whose will can't be opposed
Purushottama = All Supreme
AdhokShaja = One who cant be known thru sense organs
NArasimha = One who Has half human and half lion form.
Achyuta = Whose power never fades.
Janardhana = One who removes the bondage of births.
Upendra = Younger brother of Indra, but Supreme to all Indras.
Hari = One who removes all the sins
SrikR^iShNa = One who attracts all with His great qualities.

For the first three names (Keshava, Narayana and Madhava), the Ahuti or offering is made in the form of water. While uttering the other names, we develop an understanding that the Lord's forms are in various parts of our body and purify us inside and outside. That is the purpose of the Achamana.

The root portion of the right thumb is the seat of "Brahma-tirtha". Hold the right palm in such a way that the little finger is left out and the tip of the thumb is made to touch the base of middle phalanx of the middle finger so that the palm is in the shape of the ear of the cow.

While uttering the first three names, water is placed in right palm with an amount just enough to drown one grain of green gram three times and sipped three times.

recayitvā dakṣiṇataḥ pūrayitvā tu vāmataḥ |
kuṁbhakaṁ ca suṣumnāyāṁ viṣṇuṁ vāyuṁ ca samsmaret ||  4-149

One mAtra is the time duration to utter one short letter or one syllable. First do the rechaka or exhalation for a duration of sixteen mAtrAs. Twice that much that is 32 mAtras duration for pUraka. Twice that much that is 64 mAtras duration for kumbhaka. This is the proportion. Starting from rechaka, one keeps doubling until kumbhaka.

With concentration, one must keep practicing and increase the duration proportionately and do PrANAyAma. One should exhale thru piMgalA nADi on the right side(rechaka). Then one should inhale thru iDA nADi on the left side(pUraka). Then one should hold the breath in suShumnA nADi in the center(kumbhaka) by meditating upon Shri Hari and Vayu, who maintain our breathing process.

Note: For spiritual progress, always one exhales thru right side and inhales thru left side during prANAyAma. However during Yoga practice, which is done solely from exercise point of view, the exhale and inhale process is alternated by second time exhaling thru left and inhaling thru right. This is all during PrANAyAma. Other times, we exhale and inhale from both the nostrils.

This is just some guideline. It is strongly recommended that people have proper Guru Upadesha and this is just a helping tool to remember. Please proceed with caution and this effort is only to please Shri Hari Vayu gurugaLu.
