Akashadhikarana - Dvaita vs Advaita

By Shri Kesava Rao Tadipatri

There was an interesting discussion about AkAshAdhikaraNa.

ShaMkara's Advaita commentary also gives same view as Acharya's Dvaita commentary.

So does it pose an issue? Or does it not indicate that they are also on the right track?

Or how can we criticize them on this adhikaraNa? Or similar questions can come.

The purpose of this write-up is to give a visual picture.

A. Acharya's view same as Advaita

B. The views different

1. It poses issue to Adv 2. It does not 3. It poses 4. It does not

Here 1. and 2. are for A. and 3. and 4. are for B.

So, now we have four possibilities - A1, A2, B3, B4.

Is this an exhaustive proposition to start with? Not really. In fact there are more possibilities. How?

Now let us take one at a time.

----------------------

A. Acharya's view same as Advaita

This can have some more possibilities. Let us list all of them.

1. It poses issue to Advaita and no issue to Dvaita.

2. It poses issue to Dvaita and no issue to Advaita.

3. It poses issue to both.

4. It poses issue to neither.

What should be our course of action in all these cases?

----------------------

B. The views are different.

When we try to list, can we say - let us list the same four as above?

Not really. Why? "It" can not be used now as there are two different views.

Let us denote Advaita view as AV and Dvaita view as DV.

1. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita.

2. DV poses issue to Dvaita and AV poses no issue to Advaita.

3. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses issue to Dvaita.

4. AV poses no issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita.

Are these the only possibilities? If so, it is just different words, but same as above. Can there be more possibilities in this case? The key is this. Since the views are different, there are two sub-possibilities - AV and DV can conflict with each other or there is no conflict. Note that in all these cases, we are not yet talking about correctness. That is post discussion/analysis. We are looking at given data prior to analysis.

The following are possibilities.

1. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita and AV conflicts with DV.

2. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita and AV does not conflict with DV.

3. DV poses issue to Dvaita and AV poses no issue to Advaita and AV conflicts with DV.

4. DV poses issue to Dvaita and AV poses no issue to Advaita and AV does not conflict with DV.

5. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses issue to Dvaita and AV conflicts with DV.

6. AV poses issue to Advaita and DV poses issue to Dvaita and AV does not conflict with DV.

7. AV poses no issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita and AV conflicts with DV.

8. AV poses no issue to Advaita and DV poses no issue to Dvaita and AV does not conflict with DV.

What should be our course of action in all these cases?
