Adhika masa - 33 Namasmarane
In any puje, there is: 1. Pradhana aka primary aspect 2. Apradhana secondary aspect. In "Adhika maasa", or for that matter any worship, a set of 33 bhagavat rupas give "anugraha" through 33 tAttvika devatas, and this in turn represents complete parivaara of 33koti devatas, hence it is very meritorious to atleast chant these 33 names. This is pradhana. Various rangoli-s, Bhatti-s, Deepas, Pushparchanas, naivedyas to represent these set of 33 are done as secondary, as an anga puje. Without the former, the latter has only temporary phala. Thus, if we miss, it is more important to chant the set of 33 names. Note that this month has only 29-30 days and each day is ruled by these vyuha/group of 33 rupas of God. Each lunar year has 354 days as against 365 solar days. Thus we lose 11 days every year, and falls short by a month once in approximately 33 months. This extra month is added back as "adhika maasa". This is also called "mala maasa" as no "sankramana" happens in that adhikamaasa. The 33 special names for chanting are: 1. Vishhnu 2. Jishhnu 3. Mahavishhnu 4. Hari 5. Krishhna 6. Adoxaja 7. Keshava 8. Madhava 9. Raama 10. Achyuta 11. Purushhottama 12. Govinda 13. Vamana 14. Shrisha 15. Shrikanta 16. Vishvasaxi 17. Narayana 18. Madhuripu 19. Anirudhha 20. Trivikrama 21. Vasudeva 22. Jagadyoni 23. Ananta 24. Sheshashayi 25. Sankarshana 26. Pradyumna 27. Daityari 28. Vishvatomukha 29. Janardhana 30. Dharavasa 31. Damodara 32. Aghardana 33. Shripati
