The story of Dattatreya being the confluence or combination of trimurtis is not only against what Sri Vedavyasa depicted, but also against every logical reasoning. It is one thing to say that the Lord is beyond logic and reasoning, but it is totally wrong to depict something that is absurd and unsupported. It is not Madhva or non-Madhva thing. It is purely Vedavyasa thing. It is left to individuals whether they want to accept Vedavyasa or discard Vedavyasa.

All these weird episodes start off this way. They take a well-known episode from the scriptures and then pass through all kinds of twists and convoluted measures and I keep wondering why. Some start with an absurd hypothesis that the consorts of the trinity felt jealous of Anasuya and asked their husbands to test AnasUya. But, whoever built this story, that contradicts what is depicted in our holy scriptures, did a great job in creating a popular confusion with an absurd narration and depiction. Let us proceed on the trail.

Trimurtis blessed Atri and Anasuya and incarnated as their children. Now it suddenly takes a different turn and all those three merges into one being. Now to enable this people come up with different scenarios -

a. The divine trinity themselves decide to become one.
b. The saint Atri merges them into one.
c. The saintly Anasuya merges them into one.
d. Durvasa left for Brahmaloka and Chandra for Chandra loka and Anasuya felt sad and Dattatreya showed trimurtis non-different by showing three heads.

(This choice d. actually is the one with maximum number of difficulties. In addition to all the difficulties listed in this write-up, this version has lot more problems. All of this can be verified by Bhagavata and Mahabharata itself. No need to search anywhere else. It is well known that there are many incidents proving that Durvasa was on Earth only, disproving the theory that Durvasa went for good to Brahmaloka. Also, Durvasa, was chased by the Vishnu Chakra, which was protecting the king Ambarisha. He ran to Kailash and Brahmaloka, who tell him that Vishnu is all-Supreme, and they cannot do anything. Then he goes to Vishnu loka and Vishnu tells that he is bound by His devotees. So, he goes back and begs pardon of Ambarisha, who prays Sudarshana chakra, which becomes calm.
If all trimurtis are the same, why should Durvasa be chased by Vishnu Chakra? Durvasa, at the bequest of Kauravas, went to Pandavas with all his disciples for meal after Pandavas finished their meals and washed away the Akshaya patra. Lord Krishna by partaking one particle of rice makes Durvasa and all his disciples oppressive full and they just quietly left that place, being scared of any more food consumption. Why such pitiable state, if he is non-different from Vishnu?
Chandra was cursed by Vinayaka and worn on head by Shiva and much inferior to Indra, leave alone trimurtis. He is not amsha of Brahma, but has only Avesha of Brahma, which will be explained later.)

There may be some more wild guesses. No one has an answer as to what the provocation was and why it should happen or who asked for that (choice d. above says that Anasuya asked, but that is invalid for reasons stated above) or any other thing. Let us grant, somehow that happened for no reason.

1. Now what does this merger mean? The three souls merged or their physical bodies merged or both? If souls merged, that is against all scriptures as the souls are indivisible entities (achChedyo.yamadAhyo.ayamakledyo.ashoShya eva cha - the soul cannot be cut, burnt, wetted, dried... ), which means that their merger is also an impossibility. If the souls did not merge and only their physical bodies merged, this will lead to several problems. Firstly Vishnu is said not to have any physical body. If all the scriptures are thrown to the air and one tries to force-fit that the three souls live in a physical body, then when will that physical body go away. If it never goes away, then that means that all three of them are bound in that body forever.

2. Now this combined force must be greater than all the trimurtis and so the trimurtis must sit at the feet of this combined force. But no such is mentioned anywhere and no such claim is made. (In choice d., they did not merge, but they are same, but that goes against many incidents all through the scriptures. To support this one, one cannot ignore so many.)

3. Now the body is merged, but not the heads and so he ended up with one body and three heads. If the bodies could be merged, why not the heads also? Is it possible that the child of Brahma has four heads and so final head count can also be six? What about the final hand count of Dattatreya - two (three twos merging into two) or four (three fours merging into four) or six (three times 2), or twelve (three times 4) or some other?

4. Now this merged body resembles Vishnu’s body or Shiva’s body or Brahma’s body or one third each?

5. Now Shiva also incarnated as Durvasa, and Chandra incarnated as Soma for Atri and Anasuya with Avesha of Brahma. Now these two contributed to the merge and remained separate also? Then Why did Narayana also not do that? Or one child was born from Narayana and two from Shiva and two from Brahma. Then one each from three got merged and the second from Shiva and second from Brahma got left out? If so, where is all this mentioned?
Now choice d. version has more strange depiction. Durvasa went away to Brahma loka and Chandra to Chandraloka. Anasuya felt sad that her two sons were missing. Then Dattatreya shows that her three sons are non-different by showing three heads. But then Durvasa never had Shiva’s head and Chandra never had four heads. So, how come Dattatreya shows three heads, one Vishnu’s and one Shiva’s and one Brahma’s? But then Durvasa never had Shiva’s head! And which head of Brahma did Dattatreya show?

6. Going through Bhagavata, it is pretty clear that Dattatreya was just the incarnation from Vishnu. If people listen to garbha stuti of Brahma and Shiva in front of Devaki, it is pretty obvious that all the three are not the same. It can be politically correct statement, but not scripturally.

7. Now added to all this mess, Anagha is consort of Dattatreya. If Anagha is Lakshmi, how can she be wife of Brahma and Shiva?

8. Now people started taking wild rides, some depicting Dattatreya as Shiva and Anagha as Parvati and some depicting Dattatreya as Brahma and Anagha as Saraswathi (though this category is negligible). No matter what, with this merging business, one ends up in big mess only.

9. Does the mess end here? No, the four Vedas have to come as dogs (why dogs - may be to show that just as the dogs are faithful, the Vedas are faithful to God) and the Earth has to come as cow (why cow - may be both act like mother, kind, tolerant and nourishing). Some did not like Vedas coming as dogs and so projected that as treating all kinds of animals equally. Then why not other animals and why exactly four dogs?

10. Now, it is strange that they did not try to merge Lakshmi, Sarasvathi and Parvati. Well may be some wanted to, but did not know how exactly that need be done. Well create an event for that!! Do people have to corrupt our sacred scriptures so much?
So, what exactly the scriptures conveyed
Dattatreya is the incarnation of Vishnu alone
Durvasa is the incarnation of Shiva alone and
Chandra is another Jiva, that incarnated with the Avesha of Brahma (what does this mean and why is that so? - read further down), all these incarnated in Atri and Anasuya as per the boon given to them. There is no question of any merging business. All three of them have their own consorts. The uttama devatas have what is called niyata-pati-patnitva - meaning even in their incarnations, their own respective consorts incarnate, and they marry accordingly only. At this point lot of people get the doubt - how come Lord Krishna married 16,108. The answer is given in the scriptures itself. Only RukmiNi and SatyabhAma are Lakshmi avatAra and all the rest of them have Lakshmi Avesha. The ShanmahiShis have special Avesha. In Gopigita, the gopikas, who are aware of that say “shrayata indirA sAdhu tatra hi” (Lakshmi is specially present in all gopikas) and that is why, the Lord even approached them and only Lakshmi has the eligibility of Lord Krishna’s anga-sanga. Similarly, proper investigation into the scriptures give answers to many intricate questions.

What does Avesha mean and why Chandra was born with Brahma Avesha ?
Avesha means being present in a special way as an additional being and giving some special power. Brahma does not take avatAra as that is the wish of the Lord as well as Brahma. But Atri got the boon that trimurtis take avatAra as their children. To satisfy this, Chandra took avatAra with the Avesha of Brahma.
