The very word "sankalpa" means "well contemplated" -- realization of our dependence on devata shakti, we, with gratitude plead to the devatas and their antaryaami of desha-kaala to guide us. Again, kaala, [time] has divisions and they in turn have abhimaani-s. Their duration doesn't map with 24 hour solar cycle, hence "panchanga" makes it easier in some cases.
By remembering the inner instigators[antah preraka devatas], they bestow the following for our saadhana:
a. Tithi devatas give sampattu
b. vaara devatas give productive ayush
c. naxatra devatas remove obstacles and its cause paapa
d. yoga devatas give relief from both mental and physical diseases
e. karana devatas bestow kaarya siddhi
Apart from vaara, tithi-s, there are 27 naxatra with chandra pati-s being their abhimaani-s. Similarly, there are 27 yogas with Indra and his group of vishvedevatas, marutganas majorly being its abhimaanis.
If we know the duration of the tithi, then we can calculate karana which is half of it. There are 11 karanas, and Shiva, with his 11 rupas, its abhimaani.
Out of 11 karanas, four of them are fixed. In a lunar month these 4 appear once only on specific thithis.
They are:
1. Kimstugna - 1st half of Shukla Prathama,
2. Shakuni - 2nd half of Krishna Chathurdashi, 3. Chathushpada - 1st half of Amavasya
4. Nagava - 2nd half of Amavasya
The rest of the karanas repeat 8 times in a lunar month.
