Bhagavadgita is part of Mahabharata, composed by Vedavyasa. Firstly he precedes Panini by several centuries. Secondly there are nine grammars of which Paninian is one. Unfortunately that is the only one available today. VedavyAsa knows all nine grammars and thus his compositions go beyond Paninian. Thus even Vedas go beyond Paninian. MahavyakaraNa (which is not extant any more) is one of the nine that Vedas and Vedavyasa used. Thus Mahabharata is not only chaste Sanskrit, but one may find constructs which are beyond Paninian.
There is an interesting story. During Kalidasa time, all the asthAna pundits except Kalidasa used to sit and discuss the faults committed by Vedavyasa in his compositions. Kalidasa alone sat aloof all the time and did not participate in them. During entire discussion, a parrot used to come and kept on uttering “nava”(which means new). This went on several days. The pundits and scholars wondered for two things. 1. Why Kalidasa never participated. 2. Why only during that discussion the parrot kept saying “nava(new)”. They could not hold and asked the same to Kalidasa. Kalidasa replied “nava also means nine. You people are not even aware that there are nine Sanskrit grammars. All of us know only Paninian. Unfortunately others are lost. At least I am aware of existence of grammars other than Paninian. It is a waste of time that you people are trying to find fault based on Paninian. Vedavyasa who knows all nine went beyond Paninian. That is why I did not partake in that wrong task. The parrot (perhaps Sukacharya, son and disciple of Vedavyasa came in that form) kept on warning you people that there are nine grammars.”
